THE BRAG POEM BEFORE CHRISTMAS
by Steve LeBeau

‘Twas the week before Christmas
When all through the mail
The cards were arriving
Through snow, sleet and hail

Inside a few
Were those boring brag letters
From your so-called friends
Who should have known better

You open them up
With slight hesitation
‘Cause you don’t want to hear
About their summer vacation

The writing is dull
It starts like a pain
And as you read on
It numbs your whole brain

The words are too small
The lines run together
Your head starts to nod
And you drool on your sweater

But then a door slams
Your kids just came home
They rip open a card
And yell, “Look here’s a poem!”

You awake with a start
And try not to curse
Then you see that your cousin
Sent a brag letter in verse

You read it out loud
They laugh and they grin
“Hey, that was funny!
Read it again!”

The rhythm and rhymes
Keep rolling with cheer
And you exclaim to yourself
“I’m doing a brag poem next year!”
